Happy “National Hemp Day”!
Did you know that this Friday, February 4th, marks National Hemp Day?
Hemp has been one of the most important crops in the world, and has a long history of use in our own country. Even before the inception of the US, hemp had been farmed as an important material for rope, paper, textiles, and more. It was even grown on George Washington’s estate.
But, as many know, the mid 1900’s ushered in an era of prohibition that culminated in 1970 with hemp being lumped in with marijuana as a federally controlled substance–making the cultivation and use of these plants all but illegal.
Thankfully through the persistent efforts of activists, the tide had turned once again as the 2014 US Farm Bill was signed into law, allowing for research pilot programs for hemp farming. The progress was further solidified with the 2018 US Farm Bill as hemp was removed as a controlled substance, underpinning the vibrant and innovative hemp industry that we are proud to be a part of today.
